Omschrijving

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in micropollutant removal and a growing public awareness and concern for micropollutants. Many micropollutants are poorly degraded in conventional wastewater treatment plants. This results in negative effects to the receivingw ater bodies due to chronic exposure at low concentrations. Ozonation and other oxidation technologies are applied as chemical free wastewater treatment to remove medicines and micropollutants from wastewaters. The Netherlands have joined the quest for improvement of the quality of their water, by stimulating the implementation of full-scale treatment at specific hot spot locations. These selected wastewater treatments should reduce 70% of micropollutants. The first full-scale ozonation treatment of municipal wastewater effluent for micropollutant removal in the country has been built by Nijhuis Saur Industries and is in operation since 2023.

Luuk Hebinck (intern R&D): ”I am working on the recovery of ammonium and carbonate ions from wastewater using electrodialysis to eventually produce the salt ammonium bicarbonate which can be used as fertilizer or nitrogen feedstock. I am proud of the fact that the results I obtained in the laboratory helped the project move forward and that my work has therefore been useful for Nijhuis.

YOUR GOAL

The goal of this internship is to develop and optimize ouroxidation installation for the removal of medicines from wastewater. The internship project will be carried out by performing a series of laboratory experiments to find the optimal operational conditions and compare this to the fullscale ozone systems. Furthermore, investigating processoptimizations will be part of the assignment.
