Many water treatment processes produce concentrated inorganic wastewater streams. The inorganic compounds (like Na, Cl and so on) can’t be degraded by biological treatment.
Also the upgrading of treated wastewater to reuse water of process water / drinking water quality, usually includes an desalination step, separating the treated wastewater into a relatively clean water stream for reuse and a concentrated brine stream. Discharge of such saline wastewater streams is becoming problematic due to environmental circumstances and related discharge permit conditions.
Goal and activities
The goal of this internship or graduation assignment is to investigate and categorize the technologies for brine treatment, either to a highly concentrated liquid concentrate (MLD = Minimum Liquid Discharge) or to solid residue (ZLD = Zero Liquid Discharge). During this internship or graduation project you will investigate the fundamental technology principles, application for different brine types, and Total Cost of Ownership for the various technologies. You will look into literature reference data and contact technology providers and equipment suppliers. The final outcome of your project should help us to design optimal solutions for highly concentrated brines
