From Arizona to Winterswijk: Kevin finds his place at DLA ICT

3 juni 2025

Kevin (24) grew up in Chicago, United States, and studied Software Development in Arizona. A meeting with his Dutch girlfriend, who is originally from Winterswijk, brought him to the Achterhoek region. Since September, he has been living in Winterswijk and started working as a software developer at the IT company DLA ICT in November. His story shows that the Achterhoek also offers plenty of opportunities for international young professionals.

From America to the Achterhoek
“In the U.S., internships aren’t mandatory, so I had little experience working in a company,” Kevin explains. “Once I moved to Winterswijk, I quickly got in touch with DLA ICT through a connection. What immediately stood out to me was how welcoming everyone is. Speaking English isn’t an issue here—I was instantly made to feel part of the team.”

DLA ICT is the largest ICT provider in the Achterhoek region, where they work on a wide range of IT solutions. Think of selling software, building websites, upgrading systems, and physically installing hardware at clients’ locations. Kevin is involved in various projects as a software developer. “What I really like about this company is that you can approach anyone with ideas and suggestions. The atmosphere is professional yet informal, and everyone is approachable.”

Cultural differences and fresh perspectives
Although it took some getting used to certain Dutch habits—like having bread for lunch and biking through all kinds of weather—Kevin appreciates the focus on healthy living. “In the Netherlands, people really think long-term. You can see that in the workplace as well.”

He’s also impressed by the social aspects of working in the Netherlands. “At DLA ICT, we have lunch together, organize LAN parties and company outings. That really adds to the vibe.”

Opportunities for young talent
According to Kevin, DLA ICT offers plenty of room for young people, even if you come from abroad. “They already have international employees on board.” His tip for other international students or young professionals? “Be social and show what you’re capable of. Networking is super important—tell people you’re looking for a job and what you have to offer. In the Achterhoek, people genuinely try to help you out, but you also need to take initiative yourself.”

Why the Achterhoek?
The peace, space, culture, and openness of the people make the region attractive to Kevin. “In a big city, it’s easy to stay anonymous, but here you really become part of the community. Two weeks after I moved, I joined a volleyball team. That’s a great way to meet people quickly.”

Connection with SmartHub Young Talent
Kevin heard about SmartHub Young Talent through his colleagues. His advice to SmartHub? “Make yourself even more visible to international students and young professionals. Maybe through English-language content or events. Show that there are companies here that are open to diverse talent.”
